This is an immersion program in history and politics of the Cambodian present with a specific focus on the contemporary issues of education development work. Students will travel to Siem Reap where they will engage in a rigorous academic study program, language acquisition (Khmer), experiential learning, and carry out field research in a fascinating region of the world. The program consists of 3 core components: (a) the academic seminar will explore the history and politics of the Cambodian present and include a specific focus on the role of education development within international post-conflict reconstruction efforts; (b) serious and rigorous engagement in Khmer, with language instruction offered through the Center for Khmer Studies; and (c) a fieldwork-based project designed to answer specific research questions about access, equity, and quality of education through field placements with community partner organizations, including the Ponheary Ly Foundation and the Life Hope Association. The program also includes a spring semester course (LEDU 3510/Cambodia) examining recent Cambodian history and politics with a specific focus on education development within international post-conflict reconstruction efforts.
