Program Description

Overview

Among Sarah Lawrence's many study-abroad opportunities is the yearlong program at one of the oldest and most recognized universities in the world: Oxford. Oxford provides an unparalleled system of education: the pursuit of individual interests in tutorial work supervised by an exceptional faculty, complemented by a broad core curriculum. In your two tutorials it's just you and your professors (known as a tutors), one on one, all year long. And then there's the location. Known as the City of Dreaming Spires, Oxford has for hundreds of years been home to royalty and scholarsā€”and it will become your home, a city that blends English past and international present, natural beauty and urban energy.

Program Highlights

-- Study one-on-one with world renowned scholars
-- Receive the same rights and privileges as matriculated Oxford students
-- Experience one of the most vibrant and stimulating academic communities in the world
-- Explore historical and culturally significant sites throughout Britain in the Core Program

About Oxford and the Program

You could study abroad just about anywhere, so why choose Oxford?

To study at the Oxford is to join one of the world's most culturally vibrant and intellectually stimulating communities. Students come to Oxford from around the world to experience the brilliance of its scholars, the beauty of its architecture, and the wisdom and depth of its tradition.

Founded in 1984, the Sarah Lawrence at Oxford program is open to students from all undergraduate institutions and is limited to just 30 students annually. If admitted, you will be considered a Registered Visiting Student, a relatively rare status that gives you the same rights and privileges as matriculated Oxford undergraduates.

Beginning in late September and ending in late June, the academic year is divided into three eight-week terms. Each term, students take two courses, tutorials, for a total of 10 credits. Students who successfully complete the entire program will earn 30 credits. Students will also participate in the Core Programme, an opportunity to partake in lectures, events, and field trips.

Sarah Lawrence is affiliated with Wadham College, one of the 39 undergraduate colleges that constitute the University of Oxford. Wadham is currently home to 450 undergraduates, 100 graduate students, and a faculty of more than 100 fellows and tutors. Learn more about Wadham CollegeĀ»

For American liberal arts undergraduates, Oxford provides a transformative education experience. The proof of this claim is in the institution's 900-year track record. More than 45 Nobel Prize winners have studied or taught at the institution, as have 25 UK Prime Ministers. A tiny sampling of those who have studied at Oxford includes President Bill Clinton, King Abdullah of Jordan, philosopher Sir Isaiah Berlin, Cardinal John Henry Newman, and a long list of writers, from poets John Donne and T.S. Eliot to novelists Monica Ali and Helen Fielding to playwright Oscar Wilde and composer Andrew Lloyd-Webber. Studying at Oxford University as an undergraduate Visiting Student is unlike any educational journey one would experience in the United States.
