Program Description

Personalized Courses of Study

In Paris, Sarah Lawrence will give you the opportunity and the means to experience the creative and intellectual traditions that have made the city a destination for writers, artists and philosophers since medieval times. The Program enables you to craft a personalized and intellectually stimulating course of study, while providing you with the opportunity to take advantage of Paris’ rich cultural life.

The academic program offers an extensive range of courses: small seminars with Sarah Lawrence professors and numerous classes at some of Paris’ premier educational institutions in the humanities and the social sciences. In keeping with the Sarah Lawrence philosophy of education, each course is complemented by weekly or biweekly conference work sessions, during which you will work independently with your professors, delving deeper into course material, preparing final projects or developing personal research. In addition, you may choose from a wide selection of visual and performing arts courses at various studios and conservatories in and around Paris.

Whichever options you choose, the SLC Program Director and professors combine strong support and flexibility. Taking into consideration your interests and linguistic competency, they will guide you through the various options and enable you to pursue your studies to the fullest.

Special Intensive Programs

If you specialize in the social sciences or the visual and performing arts and wish to undertake more advanced studies in Paris, you may consider applying to one of our special intensive programs. Each of these exceptional programs provides a comprehensive curriculum that includes both academic courses and practical training or fieldwork. Enrolling in an SLC intensive program allows you to complete more than half of your coursework in your chosen field of study.

Life in Paris

In Paris, you will find that your education does not end in the classroom, but carries over into all aspects of life. The Sarah Lawrence Program puts you in a position to explore one of the world’s most intellectually vibrant cities, where history and contemporary life are in constant dialogue. Daily contact with French culture and French people will be an essential part of your education.

To further enrich this experience, the SLC Program takes you to Parisian cultural institutions and monuments of international renown, and offers numerous opportunities to meet French students through gatherings and linguistic partnerships. To help you discover other regions in France, the Program organizes excursions to the French provinces.

During your stay in Paris, you will pledge to speak French during all program activities and at the SLC Program center. As you improve your language skills, you will simultaneously learn about a new culture. The discoveries and self-reflection that come with this cross-cultural experience and independence gained by living in Paris will foster personal growth that will stay with you throughout your life.
