Information Session & Workshop: Translate Your International Experience into a Job Thursday, February 26th, 4:00 - 5:30pm 64 West 11th Street, Room 117 Studying abroad was great, but did you know it can also help you land a job after college… and beyond? Join IES Abroad’s Rachel Rice for this interactive session, where you will learn how to leverage your international experiences in the job market! From resumes to interviews to networking, you’ll leave this session with some concrete tools to help you translate your time abroad to the working world. Study Abroad Virtual Fair Wednesday, February 25th, 12:00 - 8:00pm EST Students and families are invited to sign up for CollegeWeekLive to attend the Virtual Study Abroad Fair. Through this event, students can watch live video presentations about various study abroad topics, such as program selection, financing options, scholarship applications, study abroad preparations, and the value of study abroad for career prospects. Sessions focused on study abroad opportunities in specific countries or regions will also be featured. In addition, students will hear from educational organizations about academic programs, internships and service learning options abroad, with the option to chat with live representatives from colleges & universities abroad, as well as programs around the world. Information Event: London Universities Tuesday, February 10th, 6:00 - 9:30pm Museum of the City of New York 1220 Fifth Avenue at 104th Street London Universities International Partnership will be hosting an event for all students in the New York City metro area to come and meet 16 of London’s Universities. You will have the opportunity to learn about how to study in London, as well as meet students who have studied there. The event will also include a film installation and dance performance created and performed by London graduates. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in studying in London. The HIA Fellowship brings together international groups of fellows to study minority rights and produce original research exploring how and why individuals and societies, past and present, have resisted intolerance and protected democratic values. Events for Spring 2014 Exhibitions 1994 Rwanda Genocide: Making Art out of Tragedy May 12th-16th Skybridge Gallery, Fourth Floor between 66 West 12th St & 65 West 11th St. This exhibition showcases original artwork created by Global Studies student Aissatou Diallo as a response to, and a way of reflecting upon, the 1994 genocide and the tension between beauty and the legacies of trauma she sees in Rwanda today. Her paintings complicate typical representations of the violence and reconciliation, bringing to life "the beauty and the tragedy, the dignity and grace of its people in the aftermath of the genocide." For information about other fellowship opportunities too, visit www.newschool.edu/lang/ Great Stakes in the Great Lakes: Understanding the Conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo Tuesday, December 3rd, 7:00 - 9:00pm 80 5th Avenue - Room 529 “Africa has the shape of a pistol, and Congo is its trigger.” (Frantz Fanon) The African Great Lakes region—comprised of Burundi, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania—has seen decades of conflict and turmoil. Join us—the group of students that participated in the 2013 Study Abroad Program in Rwanda—on for an evening of advocacy. Great Stakes in the Great Lakes will involve a teach-in on the Congolese Wars, where you will learn about one of the most complex and misunderstood situations in the world; “Bearing Witness”—an interactive awareness display that invites participants to ‘bear witness’ to the issues facing the Democratic Republic of Congo; and in celebration of “Giving Tuesday” help raise funds for CHABHA (Children Affected By HIV/AIDS)—a non-profit that partners with community-based, grassroots organizations to support orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa.
